Wooden cliff house in Nova Scotia

This tight-budget house was designed by MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects as a weekend getaway. The main façade doesn’t say anything about the show this building puts on after you walk in.
The architects built a simple wooden box that only makes little contact with the ground, while the major part of its length is placed over the edge of the cliff, supported by a light steel structure.

By speculating the level differences, they intended to “heighten the experience of dwelling in landscape“. The house, besides being spectacularly simple and a pleasure to look at, it’s also a sustainable and affordable design, which makes it our favourite project of the day.
